Which areas of government will Scotland be taking over from Westminster?
Wednesday, 18 March 2009 14:49
The main areas of government in Scotland which are presently controlled by LondonGovernment departments, and for which an independent Scottish Government will set p its own departments, include: A Treasury (with agencies for the collection of tax)Social Security (with benefits and other agencies)Defence (with armed forces)EU and Foreign Affairs (with embassies abroad) Among the other areas which an independent Parliament will take over will be energy, transport regulation, broadcasting, employment, and trade and industry. Many of these departments will take responsibility for government agencies already operating in Scotland. Following Independence, there will be nothing in principle to stop a single government agency, e.g. the Benefits Agency, acting by agreement on behalf of both the UK and Scottish Departments of Social Security for an interim period.
